History

The Hampton Roads Professional Beauty Technicians (HRPBT) was organized in 2009 at the end of Dr. Regina Lundy’s Presidency of the Virginia State Beauticians Association, Inc. The organization was formed by Latricia White and Wanda Davis. HRPBT is comprised of professionals from the Hampton Roads area. When this chapter was first organized, it was originally named the Hampton Cosmos from 2009 to 2010. Wanda Davis was the President of the Hampton Cosmos during this time frame. In2010, the name of the organization was changed to the Hampton Roads Professional Beauty Technicians with the blessing of the State Association .HRPBT has been a member of the State Association since the inception of the Chapter. In mid 2010, LaTonya Taliferro was elected President of HRPBT. Under the leadership, this chapter has been busy with numerous charitable and social activities. Each year, HRPBT looks forward to hosting the Annual “Looking Cool for School” event. HRPBT provides free hairstyles to over 100 children before they start the school year. Along with a new hairdo, the children are given a backpack with free school supplies collected through the school supply drive held in each member’s salon and donations received from our generous local vendors.

Annual Event

Each October, HRPBT hosts “Party with a Purpose”, a dance to bring awareness to breast cancer and promote research in finding a cure. Proceeds are given to the American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. HRPBT also participates in the Breast Cancer Awareness walk sponsored by the American Cancer Society held in Norfolk, VA and Newport News, VA. Each Saturday in October, we host health clinics at each Chapter members’ salon to provide information on breast cancer and early detection. Quarterly, we hold continual education clinics to stay abreast of the new advances and to hone our skills in cosmetology. To increase our membership and bring awareness of our Chapter too there professionals in the area, we host a “Meet and Greet” to recruit new members to our Chapter to educate them on the work we provide in the community and professionalism in the field. During the holidays, we collect food at each salon to support the Peninsula Food Bank who assist families during the holidays. Each month, we volunteer each month at various events.

Awards

In January 2013, HRPBT was chosen to host the 51st Annual Mid-Winter Conference in Hampton, VA. In July 2013, several members of the HRPBT attended the National Beauty Cultural League, Inc. annual conference in Arlington, VA. Three members received advanced degrees in Cosmetology from the National Beauty Cultural League Institute. Tinette Coles received her Bachelor of Arts and Skye Williams and LaTonya Taliferro advanced to the second level of the Doctoral program.
